This project will explore how and why women use, choose and access the music they listen to in their everyday lives. Through the use of ethnographic research I will attempt to explore the relationships women have with popular music, to gain an understanding of women’s lived experiences and how they conceptualise their own gendered identities through the music they choose to listen to.
Through my work I intend to create an original perspective and understanding of how gender based constraints affect the ways women listen to music. In addition, with the application of post-structuralist feminist theory I aim to unpick and understand the female experience by exploring how women negotiate, resist and discuss marginalization, and their negative representation and positioning (as music fans and consumers) within popular music culture.
