Title:
Gendered Popular Music Practices: An exploration into how women use, choose and access music in their everyday lives

About:
This project will explore how and why women use, choose and access the music they listen to in their everyday lives. Through the use of ethnographic research I will attempt to explore the relationships women have with popular music, to gain an understanding of women’s lived experiences and how they conceptualize their own gendered identities through the music they choose to listen to.
Through my work I intend to create an original perspective and understanding of how gender based constraints affect the ways women listen to music. In addition, with the application of post-structuralist feminist theory I aim to unpick and understand the female experience by exploring how women negotiate, resist and discuss marginalization, and their negative representation and positioning (as music fans and consumers) within popular music culture.

Research Questions:
1) How do women use, choose and access music in their everyday lives?
2) Do gender based constraints impact upon, influence and limit the ways women use, choose and access music?
3) How do women negotiate and resist their negative representation as passive fan and consumer within popular music culture?

Methodology:
I aim to work with both men and women from a wide variety of backgrounds in order to create a diverse sample. Whilst this project aims to specifically explore the female experience, male voices will be incorporated into my work as a control group. The inclusion of the male perspective will allow me to gather more data, to explore further intersections and to create a more nuanced argument of how gender-power relations operate within popular music culture. This additional data will allow me to analyze my results comparatively, and to explore if there are any differences in the way men and women choose, use and access music in their daily lives.

Sample:
Group a) Teenage Years (ages 16 – 19)
Group b) Young Adults (20 – 29)
Group c) The Middle (30 – 44)
Group d) The Later Years (45 – 59)
Group e) The Over 60s (60 plus)
